This blog chronicles his adventures and training.Juniperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11509960413960894986noreply@blogger.comBlogger291125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4762762826377694092.post-49440512638434946282020-01-22T15:29:00.002-08:002020-01-22T15:29:22.205-08:00NW1 trial and clove ORTChimera had his first NW1 trial attempt on December 8th. He passed vehicles, containers, and interior easily. We had a snag on exterior: he sniffed at the base of a big plastic trash bin and then looked at me. I hesitated because I thought it might just be "that trash bin was interesting. What are we doing again?" In class, we'd recently had times that I thought he was alerting when he was just checking on something. He then left and searched elsewhere, and there was one other spot that he lingered but then moved on (without looking up at me). When we passed the trash bin again, he sniffed all around where the odor was traveling but didn't return to where the hide was, as I had expected. I guess since I'd accidentally told him that was wrong, he assumed I knew what I was doing and didn't bother to tell me about it anymore. We timed out. The judge said, "Juniper, you know where it is." I said "it's right there under the trash can!" "Yup. Listen to your dog." D'oh. Still a great day.

Our next opportunity to trial will be end of March, if we get into the lottery.

In the meantime, we had another opportunity for an ORT just an hour away, so I went ahead and signed us up for clove. No shenanigans this time - he clearly searched down the line of boxes and gave his usual "I smell it in this box!" behavior at the hot box.Juniperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11509960413960894986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4762762826377694092.post-24806617246621012462019-08-21T22:50:00.002-07:002019-08-21T22:50:49.100-07:00Odor Recognition TestsI signed Cai up for an Odor Recognition Test, in all three scents so that we could get it over with in one day. He found the first two (birch, anise) super fast. He didn't do a fancy trained alert, but was clearly extra interested in the correct boxes. For clove, he didn't hit the correct box on his first pass, and then he second-guessed what we were doing and climbed on top of a box and sat on it. He had sometimes done that during training, when he was confused about not being able to directly access the odor. I said "alert" but I knew that it was wrong as it came out of my mouth. As soon as I moved him away, he alerted on the correct box. Darn it.

We joined a weekly class with Jennie Kiefer. She's great about presenting new challenges every time, so his understanding of the search is continually growing. Cai is mostly ready to do level 1 containers, interiors, and exteriors, as long as the hide isn't too far off the ground, but we haven't done vehicles at all yet.Juniperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11509960413960894986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4762762826377694092.post-3328842574564183062018-11-21T10:39:00.000-08:002018-11-21T10:39:13.087-08:00Fast CAT record, Rally-Free Elite Novice legWe had two Fast CAT runs over the weekend. On the first one I forgot to tell the lure operator that he's fast and to make sure that the lure stays ahead of him. Instead we got what I've now recognized as a consistent pattern: he started to catch up to the lure and drift to the side, then slowed down slightly, then picked his head up and started looking for me. He assumed that the nearest person standing ahead of him was me and sped up toward her - it was the lure operator. I called him loudly and he noticed me and finally crossed over the finish line and came right to my arms. I didn't bother to find out what his time had been (probably 14+ seconds).

For our second run, I told the operator to make sure that the lure stayed way ahead of him. I also started calling him much earlier. He set a new record for himself! He ran in 11.72 seconds (17.45 mph) rather than his usual 12.5ish (16.5ish mph). Very cool.

Earlier in the month we drove all the way down to Fetch Sam in San Jose to participate in a video event with friends. The space is great but the commute was awful. Next time I'll sign up but record at Sherry's or somewhere closer. As usual we had a few little moments of distraction and our heel position is inconsistent but Cai was happy to work with me. To earn a leg in Elite Novice, you have to score at least 165, and we got 170. (Probably would have been 173-174 if not for camera not showing the switchback at station #4.)
When we're practicing at home, he jumps on me when I get the odor out, and then scratches at the door while I'm hiding it.

We're currently doing private lessons with Jennie Kiefer. I was impressed at how well Cau worked at our first lesson, in a brand new place, even around picnic tables with old food and dog pee smells. So far we're doing mostly exterior hides and presenting new puzzles, with the tin always accessible. Last time we did a single box drill to introduce him to the idea of searching boxes. (He was confused and offering me lots of eye contact at first, but once he caught the whiff of odor he went into hunt mode and found the right one quickly.)

Jennie says there will be an ORT in the area in early 2019, and if I keep up with practice he should be able to pass it with style.

I didn't used to enjoy nose work much, but now that agility is off the table, I appreciate it more.Juniperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11509960413960894986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4762762826377694092.post-42203875459709322342018-07-21T00:27:00.000-07:002018-07-21T00:27:08.129-07:00Retiring from agilityChimera seems to have completely recovered from the disc injury he sustained 3 weeks ago. He had his regular appointment with his chiropractor yesterday. I asked her whether I should retire him from agility, and she said yes. He might be fine for a long time but he's likely to keep getting hurt, and we know that when he does, he hides it until it's extreme.

After years of training, waiting until he was mature and confident before trialing, and finally competing with qualifying runs nearly every single time... we're out with just our novice jumpers and standard titles.

Obviously life with my dog is about more than competing, but we both love agility and I am sad at how things have turned out.

We'll continue with low key sports and tricks training. I'm thinking about doing nose work more seriously (we just dabble here and there).Juniperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11509960413960894986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4762762826377694092.post-58496737459739444042018-06-29T22:49:00.000-07:002018-06-29T22:49:25.643-07:00Another emergency vet visit - spinal painWe had agility class on Tuesday night and Chimera did great, other than a few mistakes in the weave poles, which usually mean that he's experiencing some physical discomfort. At bedtime I squatted down and invited him to jump onto my lap so that I could pick him up and carry him up to my loft bed - our usual routine. He started to jump but didn't make it. Something dinged in the back of my head but I didn't fully notice it. On the second try he climbed up onto my lap and we went to bed.

Wednesday morning, Cai was subdued. He was walking instead of running on our way to the yard and back in. I don't think he peed - he just sat by the doorway to the yard. (I was busy monitoring a boarding dog so I'm not sure.) When I gave him breakfast, he just sat and looked at me instead of chowing down like usual. Crap. I had a date with Miki to hike our dogs together. I decided to leave Cai at home and see how he was doing when I got back.

He had eaten his breakfast while I was out but was now clearly in a lot of pain. He was moving slowly, with a roached back, and shivering. He was lying down a lot. When he started to jump up, he yelped and stopped.

Our regular vet was able to get us in for 6 pm. He reacted with a hard look and snap when she felt along his spine. She said that it was most likely intervertebral disc disease. She prescribed an NSAID, a nerve pain reliever, and strict crate rest and on leash potty breaks for 2-3 weeks. If he doesn't improve, we'll go to Davis and get more testing done (such as an MRI). Most likely he will recover with conservative management.

He's being very good about spending all day in his crate. I still carefully lift him up to sleep in bed with me, since that's our only bonding time right now. He's clearly feeling better with the pain medication, but he's still moving carefully and slowly.

I'm wondering if I should retire him from agility.Juniperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11509960413960894986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4762762826377694092.post-50214048356526390782018-06-03T17:52:00.002-07:002018-06-03T17:52:53.780-07:00Hemorrhaging in left eyeYesterday evening I saw that when Cai looked to the right, the left side of his left eye was bright red where the sclera should be white. No swelling and no damage around the eye. No change in behavior from Cai - he was his usual perky, barky self. Off to UC Davis we went for an emergency visit. We were there for 3 hours. They found that his eye was mostly healthy - good pressure, no scratches, no ulcers. They ran blood tests just in case it was a result of disease like a clotting disorder, but those came back clear. So we think that the bleeding is a result of a physical trauma, and the most likely candidate is that Terra hit him in the head with a giant paw and got his eye. She does that when she wants him to play with her. It does not get the intended result. This is why I usually don't leave them together unsupervised, but obviously I'll need to step up my game. We were sent home with some drops to put in twice a day and instructions to monitor and recheck in two weeks.

During the exam, Cai was well behaved and showed off his cooperative care training, except when the vet or student wanted to touch around his left eye. That was clearly painful, and he growled and snapped. They were both sympathetic. I realized that I had forgotten his custom made basket muzzle that I had ordered specifically for situations like this. We used a fabric muzzle. They let me do most of the restraint because Cai was much calmer when it was me handling him. I gave him lots of treats and breaks from the muzzle in between the vet checking his eyes with various instruments. He even did a mostly-voluntary blood draw at the end. He was nearing the end of his patience so I had to place my hands gently on his chest and side to remind him not to move, but he placed his paw in the vet's hand on his own and didn't shy away - we didn't need to use the muzzle for this part. After that the student was supposed to do a standard physical exam. (They had done the eye exam first, then blood work, then physical last since that was least pressing.) Cai grudgingly let her take his temperature and listen to his breathing and heart rate. He didn't let her touch him though - when she tried, he really started snarling. He was obviously DONE and she was scared by his response, so we stopped the physical exam.

I wish we could have made it even less stressful for him, but clearly our prep work at his regular vet, plus all the handling practice I've done over the years, had a positive impact. I was proud of my little monster.

I talked a little about clicker training with the student, and I narrated what Cai was doing and "saying" as we worked. I hope I helped educate them a bit (since vets don't usually get much education on behavior and training) and made a good impression as well.Juniperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11509960413960894986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4762762826377694092.post-20160368472967242192018-05-08T21:19:00.001-07:002018-05-08T21:19:31.854-07:00AKC Agility Qs in Open Standard and Jumpers

First four photos were taken then. I asked him to jump up a second time to get some more. All those times that I've asked him to do a handstand with his back feet up against raised objects paid off. Look how he reached out and confidently balanced!
He was perfect with his jumps, crosses, and teeter. He was fast and he didn't get distracted, other than glancing over at the judge as she approached him on the a-frame descent. The only problem was that in both runs, he initially blew right past the weave pole entrances. Both times I called him back and resent him, and he then did them without mistakes but slowly, not with confidence. I'd already started remedial work on the weaves as this has shown up in practice as well, but it hasn't clicked yet.
I got a video of our standard run:
As usual, Cai ran as fast as he could, about 16.5 mph. He actually outran the lure - I need to tell the operator to make it go faster in the future.

I had another competitor release him at the start. He is now totally
comfortable being given to a stranger, waiting in line, and taking off
at the start without me. He wants to get those bags!! I can always see him lift his head and look for
me as he approaches the finish line.

On the first run, he started to come toward me at the finish, but then noticed the lure again and ran over to bite and shake the bags. The second time, he didn't bother and came right to me.

My photographer friend Olga was at the trial and took gorgeous photos. Here are my favorite two (click on either one to see it pop up in full screen):
It was a great event put on by the NorCal Whippet Club - they always move things along quickly and are well organized. Cai ran as fast as he could and this time, came right toward me as he spotted me at the finish line. In fact, he would lift his head and start glancing around shortly before the finish line, and one time started to shift toward one of the timers as if he thought that was me. I called his name and he immediately corrected course. His time was the same as usual - around 12.5 seconds, which is about 16.5 mph.

I took a video of his second run. It's a bit hard to see because he's tiny and he's coming directly at the camera, but toward the end you can see his happy face as he spots me.

This completes his BCAT title (the first level in Fast CAT).Juniperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11509960413960894986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4762762826377694092.post-3016954611420743242018-02-23T21:11:00.001-08:002018-02-23T21:11:10.961-08:00Rally-FrEe Champion title (R-FE/CH) and first freestyle legsREDD had our sort-of-annual live event at the beginning of February. Chimera "No Audience Member Shall Move While I Work" Monstra and I earned the RF Champion title with scores that would have been quite good if not for his major distracted episode on Saturday and the breakdown of the backwards weave behavior (which was used on both days). Here's Saturday, which scored 138:

Other than the obvious, I was very happy with how Cai did. When he was with me, he was engaged and willing to do these silly tricks. Even after the major distraction in the middle, he went back to work without stress.

Here's Sunday, which scored 167:

We debuted in Musical Freestyle and earned two novice legs. The song we performed to was Jill Sobule's "I Kissed A Girl" (edited down for length). As I look back on our routine, I think that it is quite boring and has too many technical positional elements (ie side passes, backing up, pivots). I'll record and submit one more leg without major changes, but I'm looking forward to developing something that's more fun for both Cai and the audience for our next level. On Saturday, he was precise but slow and not into it. On Sunday, I changed the beginning to start off with a little jog, and had him do a couple of jumping hand touches during the routine. The hand touches look awkward and mess up our flow but successfully kept his attitude up. Here's Sunday:
Chimera used to be terrible at coming when called, especially away from other dogs. Nowadays he is nearly perfectly behaved. At Lagoon Valley, he started running after a flock of geese taking off from the field. I called him, and he immediately, without any change in speed, made a wide turn and raced right back to me!

And here he is walking next to my side at Pt Isabel:
I overslept on the first day, so we only got to do Standard. Cai was wild. He ran super fast! And blew past 3 obstacles! And slid off the table! And of course missed his weave entrance. By the end I was laughing at him so hard that I had to stop at the weaves to catch my breath. One of my friends took a video of this glorious run:

The next day was back to normal. Cai was his usual fast rather than "omg I can't keep up," and he didn't blow past any obstacles. He did miss a couple of turn cues when he was distracted by things outside the ring, but both runs were qualifying. Got weaves on the first try in both runs, if I remember correctly. (It's all a blur now, since Terra came down with pneumonia that afternoon, and then I got sick as well.)

Our next trial is mid-February, and hopefully we'll get his Novice titles in Standard and Jumpers! I'm not running Time 2 Beat or FAST yet because I can't handle those extra mental challenges.Juniperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11509960413960894986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4762762826377694092.post-85379388336533294982017-12-21T19:53:00.000-08:002017-12-21T19:53:07.519-08:00Happy Solstice!

I recorded at Sherry's. I could record here in the back yard, but Chimera moves much better on a flat grassy field than on wood chips, and I wanted to set him up for success. Unfortunately on the day we had set aside for recording, it was extremely windy. Our ring gates were falling over, and one of the Free Choice signs blew away, never to be seen again. Poor Cai. This was not his best work. Despite the difficult environment, we qualified with a score of 142. That completes his title in the Advanced class, which is called R-FE/M.

We'll now be in the Championship class, which is identical to the Advanced class. (After that is the Grand Championship class, which requires 5 scores of 175+. That will be a challenge for us.)Juniperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11509960413960894986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4762762826377694092.post-70660480090198525772017-12-02T19:04:00.000-08:002017-12-02T19:04:10.228-08:00First AKC agility Qs!Chimera was entered into his first AKC agility trial yesterday. We did a standard novice run and a jumpers novice run and qualified in both!

I had been sure that Cai's height was just under 12" and therefore he would need to jump 12". However he measured in at 11" with one rep and 10.45" with the second, so he's all set to only jump 8" in AKC! That's a relief - it's easier on his body, and of course he'll be faster on the course.
Jumpers was one big counter-clockise loop for #1-9. Before #10 I did a rear cross, and a second rear cross before #13. After #7 I was glancing up ahead and heard Cai give a loud squeal. I looked back and he was standing in one spot, hunched over awkwardly. The bar was still up, so my best guess was that he had landed oddly. I asked him to take the next jump, and he did it normally. So I decided to finish the run unless he showed me that he was hurt. He did the rest flawlessly. After we finished I asked the judge if he saw what had happened. He and a couple people from the ring crew all confirmed that Cai squealed as he jumped over #7, but since the bar was still up, he mostly likely had barely caught a toe on the bar.

I don't think that he was truly hurt as he would have been limping and/or slowed down for the rest of the course. Instead he sped back up and finished with enthusiasm. He didn't limp as I walked him around afterwards.

I put him back in the car for 90 minutes until it was our turn in Standard. He was sound asleep when I went back for him after the walk through and was slow to perk up. I worried that I hadn't given him enough time to wake back up and warm up.

Terra chewed on the map a bit.

I did a front cross after the teeter and again after the weaves, making sure to go deep so that he would have a straight approach to the broad jump.

He hesitated at the top of the a-frame, which was unusual. No problems with the tire or teeter. I saw him hesitate just slightly and look closely at the panel and broad jumps, which he hasn't seen in a long time, but I repeated the cue "hup!" a few times and so he trusted me and jumped them. On the weaves, he got distracted and looked off and popped out. Fortunately novice allows a redo and on the second try he was perfect.

So all in all I'm quite happy with how we did. I'll keep an eye on his toes (and let Dr Wallace know at his next chiropractic appointment next week). And I'll continue to work on figuring out just the right balance between letting him acclimate and warm up but not tiring him out.

Time to check the calendar for our next trial!Juniperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11509960413960894986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4762762826377694092.post-45720595555661902572017-11-15T14:57:00.002-08:002017-11-15T14:57:35.014-08:00Vet practiceWe took a break from practicing handling at the vet's office after I brought Terra home. I scheduled another one and had the tech run through a typical exam with him. She checked his eyes, ears, teeth, pulse temperature, lifted his front legs to look at his chest/belly, and palpated his abdomen. Later I had her stretch and feel all four legs. Here and there he gave mildly stressed body language (tail down, yawn, and/or tense face), but he tolerated it. He only tried to avoid her when there was a dog on the other side of the door that he needed to bark at, and when she picked him up (which I should have told her not to do). We had previously also worked toward getting a voluntary blood draw, but we're close to the limit of what we can do without actually drawing blood. Maybe one more session with that to come. Aside from that, I need to do practice a lot more with settling calmly on his side.Juniperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11509960413960894986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4762762826377694092.post-91092791510721451092017-11-10T21:59:00.002-08:002017-11-10T21:59:51.297-08:00Monthly chiro adjustment, rally-free failureI brought a cheese and salmon Bark Pouch for Cai to lick at during his monthly chiropractic adjustment. He loved it and was so enthused that he didn't growl or even fidget once. Dr Wallace was impressed. As usual, she had to fix up his pelvis and front left shoulder. She noted that his back left leg was also a little off, which was probably from hitting it on the agility tire on Tuesday. No injury to his toes, though.

I asked if she thought it would be okay to raise his jump height back to 12" and she said no reason not to. That means we can finally compete again!! We'll be doing AKC since it's the venue I'm most familiar with and is very common. (I'd love to do more TDAA as well but the one club that hosted events seems to have given up due to low entries and lack of volunteers to help run things.)

I signed up for a Rally-FrEe video event and we went to Sherry's to record. Cai was distractable and imprecise in his tricks. I stopped partway through our first run. We tried again and he was better but then he left the "ring" to follow a scent, which is an automatic disqualification. He's never good for more than two runs so we stopped for the day. We came back a few days later but it was raining so I had to scratch our entry.

I signed up for the world wide video event next month. I'll do more training in the meantime and hopefully we'll do better. I had expected too much from him after a long break without practice.Juniperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11509960413960894986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4762762826377694092.post-46413832372298662952017-11-07T16:34:00.000-08:002017-11-07T16:34:17.004-08:00Foot owieChimera has never been good at the tire. He tends to misjudge the take off point. This morning he banged his back left foot against it and came up limping. I examined him, walked him around a bit, and then he was putting weight on it. I ran him over a small sequence but he was still compensating for it, so we went home early. I'm pretty sure it's just a little owie rather than a real injury - he's always been a drama queen.Juniperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11509960413960894986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4762762826377694092.post-1391394049952295532017-10-31T19:42:00.002-07:002017-10-31T19:42:42.429-07:00Agility update, recent picturesWe've moved up to 8 inches in agility class. (We'd been doing 4 inches for a while so that we could get back into the groove after our long break.) Cai is flying over the jumps, and we're much more in sync now. Only thing that's still lacking is Cai's drive forward if I am not moving quickly. I have to be very careful not to slow down early on sends, which pulls him off. I'll move up again to 12 inches after his next chiropractic adjustment. If things still look good, we'll finally be ready to enter AKC Novice.
I'm glad the enjoys the chase but man is that annoying.

He ran full out and reached an estimated speed of 16.40 mph - consistent with his previous runs. The time to run 300 yards was 12.47 seconds. That earns him 32.8 points, bringing his total to 121.29. We need only 28.71 points to get his BCAT title - one more run! Of course I don't do this for the titles, but because he LOVES it.

This time I had another person release him at the start and caught him at the end. I squeaked his favorite ball and tossed it ahead of him as he crossed the finish line. The squeak worked to get his attention but he looked so disappointed that I didn't throw the ball very far. Then I scooped him up and fed him many many pieces of chicken to make it a memorable, pleasant event. We'll see if that holds up for next time.Juniperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11509960413960894986noreply@blogger.com0
